The Telegraph :: New London, Connecticut

A left field pop hit that seemingly came out of nowhere, "Barbie Girl" by the Danish pop band Aqua was released in April 1997 as the third single from the group's debut studio album, Aquarium. The song topped the charts worldwide, particularly in European countries such as the United Kingdom, where it was a number-one hit for four weeks and remains one of the best-selling singles of all time. Aqua holds the record as the best selling Danish band with around 33 million records sold. Meanwhile, Miami-based Velva Blu released a clever cover version of the massive hit in the summer of 1997 that caught the ear of club DJs who began spinning the track and it's various remixes. The single caught on and eventually charted all the way up in Canada. In celebration of the renewed interest in all things Barbie, especially with the imminent arrival of the new "Barbie" movie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling coming this summer, One of Miami's premier dee jay's, DJ Afrowax has been given the green light from Velva Blu to produce a series of remixes of Barbie Girl as a celebration and tribute. With DJ Afrowax at the helm, it's bound to be a hit all over again
