Among the best of the new crop is Division of Laura Lee, a quartet from Goteberg that disassembles rock into its most formative components and rebuilds it with a distinct love of the smartest brand of bonehead punk and just a dash of pop sophistication. DOLL's sophomore album, Das Not Compute, amplifies the most raucous elements of the band's 2002 debut, Black City, while folding in elements of buzzy psychedelia and stripped down classic rock for counterpoint. "Does Compute" and "Breathe Breathe" make clear DOLL's love of the Stooges or Minor Threat, while on "Endless Factories" and "To the Other Side" the band's sonic assault waxes melodic. Division of Laura Lee would have been well served by simply repeating the political and personal intensity of Black City, but the on Das Not Compute the band proves itself to be every bit as concerned about vision as volume.
